Gouache

Gouache

A brilliant and vibrant water-based paint, gouache will render your image velvety and smooth. High in opacity and pigment, you'll find that a little gouache goes a long way.

Hard Pastels (Conté)

The traditional brick red colour of the hard pastel ( Conté) is the closest modern equivalent to the red chalk the Old Masters used in Europe during medieval times - and today we can see why with this excellent sketching material.

Conté sticks or Conté crayons, are composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a wax or clay base, square in cross-section.

Lead Pencils

In most creative fields, it's impossible to get away from one important tool—a pencil.

It doesn't matter if you're an illustrator, a professional fine artist, a jeweller or whether you're just learning to draw, a graphite pencil is an essential part of any artist's supplies.

Markers & Pens

Mungyo Oil Pastels

These versatile crayons have a soft, slightly oily quality that makes them the perfect tool for blending. Made from pigment mixed with a non-drying oil and wax binder, oil pastels can be used on canvas, paper, wood and even glass.

You can use oil pastels on top of acrylic paint, but please remember that you can't paint acrylic paint on top of the oil pastel (you can paint oil paint on top of oil pastel, however).

Other Oil Paint Mediums

Mediums, oils and varnishes for altering the handling characteristics of your oil colours. Traditionally Turpentine and Linseed Oil have been added to thin the oil paint, moving progressively from the 'lean' layers (more turpentine) to the 'fat' layers (more linseed oil).

Liquin is a very popular soy oil based alkyd medium. It speeds up the drying time somewhat and creates a very stable paint layer which can become shiny - but this can be resolved with a varnish when your painting is finished and fully dry.
